New HuT Factsheet Out Now: Using Serious Games to Promote Risk Awareness
Project Update / April 14, 2026
We have released our third factsheet, exploring how serious games can transform the way we learn about risk.
By combining education and gameplay, serious games offer an engaging and interactive way to break down abstract concepts such as probability, uncertainty, and risk reduction strategies. Instead of passive learning, participants actively explore decision-making processes and experience the consequences of their choices in a simplified, game-based environment.
Through gamification, complex ideas become:
- More accessible
- Easier to visualise
- More engaging to learn
This approach is particularly powerful for younger audiences, helping build awareness and critical thinking skills early on.
Within the HuT project, researchers have developed “Safe Haven”, a card-based serious game designed primarily for high-school students.
In the game, players take on the role of municipal decision-makers, navigating:
- Risk as a combination of hazard, exposure, and vulnerability
- The probabilistic nature of disasters
- The impact of different risk reduction strategies
Tested with 200+ participants across Europe, from students to experts, the game has proven to be both educational and engaging, demonstrating the value of serious games in fostering real understanding.
