Disaster early-warning systems can succeed — but collective action is needed

Excerpt: Read the article in Nature to find out what we should all do to face climate extremes

Our partner UCL has recently published a comment piece in Nature entitled ‘Disaster early-warning systems can succeed — but collective action is needed’.

The piece argues that one of the most important things in developing and using warnings is that we all ‘see’ and respect each other, in whatever capacity we have (at the grass roots, at high tables, wherever), and work to grow the collective effort. This article supports the ongoing work led by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and World Meteorological Organization at COP28 UAE by calling for all people at all organizational levels to engage in a bottom-up and top-down process that accommodates feedbacks and loops. Risks are accelerating, climate risks are accelerating, and warning systems have lagged behind.

‘A change in attitude is urgently needed’.
