Highlights from the 3rd International Conference on Natural Hazards and Risks in a Changing World

News release / June 25, 2024

Excerpt: he 3rd International Conference on Natural Hazards and Risks in a Changing World, hosted in Amsterdam, brought together experts and scholars from around the globe to address compound and multi-hazard risks. A notable session featured significant contributions from The Hut’s own Maryam Rokhidek and project coordinator Michele Calvello.

Maryam Rokhidek presented a compelling paper titled “Towards Achieving the Panacea of Effective Multi-Hazard Warning Systems for All.” She emphasized the EU-funded project, The HuT, which focuses on integrating human and technological elements to enhance the design, development, and implementation of multi-hazard warning systems. Her presentation explored the project’s case studies to illustrate effective multi-hazard warnings. She delved into the decision-making processes, various scales involved, and the multi-directionality of communicating warnings, aiming to establish successful strategies across diverse hazards.

Michele Calvello, The Hut’s project coordinator, discussed the “Standard Protocol for Evaluating Warning Systems” within the framework of “The HuT: The Human-Tech Nexus – Building a Safe Haven to Cope with Climate Extremes.” The protocol, developed from two case studies, will undergo further testing throughout the project’s duration. This initiative aims to collect detailed information from various warning systems, facilitating a comparative study of systems operating worldwide under different weather and climate-related risks.

The conference underscored the critical need for innovative solutions and robust warning systems to mitigate the impacts of natural hazards. The contributions of Rokhidek and Calvello exemplify the cutting-edge research and practical applications being developed to address these global challenges.

Strengthening disaster warnings and scaling up nature-based solutions in Europe: The Hut Policy Briefs

Drawing on research from Iceland, Italy, Switzerland, the UK, Spain, Germany and Lithuania, the briefs show how public engagement and co-creation can make early warning systems more trusted and inclusive, and set out concrete policy options from technical manuals to cross-sectoral coordination units for moving nature-based solutions from isolated pilots to systematic, large-scale practice.
