VILNIUS DRR FORUM
Vilnius university, Vilnius municipality / March 12, 2025
During the forum, The HuT project activities in Lithuania and other European countries will be presented, an analysis of the urban pluvial floods observed in Vilnius in 2013-2024, as well as the future precipitation forecasts for the capital, the capacity of existing rainwater drainage networks in the Historic centre of Vilnius to withstand extreme floods, etc.
The event will aim to connect the knowledge, experience and activities of national and municipal decision-makers, disaster liquidators, urban planners and practitioners of other fields, local communities, residents and scientists.
The inclusive discussions of various stakeholders will be organized in order to find out how we can prepare for and overcome the urban flooding problems caused by extreme precipitation in Vilnius, how, taking into account the expected risks, it is necessary to adapt ordinary life routines, change the city’s surface wastewater infrastructure, correct urban planning and design practices, strengthen the city’s green framework, apply nature-based solutions, etc.

15.30 – 15.50 Coffee break
15.50 – 17.30 Discussion, facilitated by G. Godiene
- Assessing possible climate changes, together with stakeholders we seek to decide, what solutions of disaster risk reduction are possible and acceptable in Vilnius, to make a list of measures and prioritize them.
- In order to focus our future elaboration on Climate proofing design recommendations, we need to find out main social thresholds about acceptance of possible precipitation and urban flooding levels. To discuss what situations we need to avoid, to what we need to adapt and how
- To collect needs – what information about pluvial flooding is lacking in different interest groups – local communities, practitioners, decision makers, planners, world heritage protection sector, etc.
