The-HuT Nexus: Strengthening the Future of Disaster Risk Reduction at the Multi-Hazard DRR Academy
Project Update / December 18, 2024
The Multi-hazard Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Academy, held from October 23 to 26 at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), brought together over 40 early-career researchers and practitioners from around the world. This unique gathering was organized by several leading research projects, including Paratus, MYRIAD-EU, The-HuT, and Directed, and aimed to foster a collaborative environment for tackling the interconnected hazards that pose growing risks to communities worldwide.
As one of the key organizers, The-HuT Nexus was instrumental in shaping the event’s success: Nieves Lantad Zarzosa, Amparo Núñez and Marcel Hürlimann, Seniors form UPC, who were part of the Local Organisation Committee (LOC) team, ensured seamless event execution while Maria Vittoria Gargiulo, ECR from UNISA, played an active role in crafting a transformative experience for all participants. From UPC, while the ECR Flavio Alexander Asurza Veliz (UPC) alongside Gaetano Pecoraro, Rosa Menichini, and Angelo Giuseppe Tarullo (UNISA) brought valuable insights as active participants.
A Break from Traditional Learning Models
Unlike the usual academic conferences, the Academy was designed to be a highly interactive and participatory event. This innovative format allowed early-career professionals to actively contribute to the program through peer-to-peer learning. Rather than passively receiving information, participants had the opportunity to lead breakout workshops, engage in plenary sessions, and share their insights with others. Senior researchers supported these efforts but were not the focal point, allowing for a more egalitarian and dynamic learning environment.
This emphasis on collaboration and knowledge exchange resonated throughout the event. The atmosphere was one of mutual support and professional camaraderie, providing participants the chance to form lasting connections that will help propel multi-hazard DRR forward.
Tackling Complex Themes in Multi-Hazard Risk Reduction
The Academy’s curriculum was structured around four key themes, each addressing critical aspects of multi-hazard risk management:
- Identifying Multi-hazard Events: Participants explored the complexities of co-occurring, consecutive, or triggering hazard combinations and discussed methods for predicting and understanding these dynamic events.
- Dynamics of Vulnerability and Exposure: This theme examined how vulnerability and exposure evolve over time, influenced by factors like urbanization, socio-economic conditions, and past disasters.
- Multi-hazard Risk Impacts and DRR Strategies: With the compounding impacts of multi-hazard events, this theme focused on strategies for assessing and mitigating risks in changing environmental and social conditions.
- The Human Factor in DRR: The most cross-cutting theme, this session highlighted the crucial role of human behavior, community engagement, and stakeholder involvement in disaster resilience. Participants discussed how local knowledge and decision-making processes shape disaster outcomes.
A Collaborative Spirit
The spirit of collaboration was perhaps most evident during the poster presentations, where participants showcased their work and exchanged ideas informally. These interactions, often spilling into coffee breaks and evening socials, allowed for in-depth discussions and fostered an environment of creative problem-solving. The proposal-writing workshop on the final day of the event was another highlight, offering participants a chance to integrate their learning and develop interdisciplinary project proposals aimed at addressing the complex challenges of multi-hazard DRR.
Looking Ahead: Continuing the Conversation
The success of the Multi-hazard DRR Academy does not end with its conclusion. The organizing projects—Paratus, MYRIAD-EU, The-HuT, and Directed—are committed to continuing the dialogue and building on the Academy’s momentum. For those eager to stay involved, the EGU General Assembly 2025 will feature a dedicated scientific session and short courses that will delve deeper into the themes of multi-hazard DRR. These upcoming opportunities promise to further strengthen the global network of early-career professionals and provide a platform for the next phase of innovation in disaster resilience. The-HuT Nexus is proud to have contributed to such an inspiring and collaborative event. By investing in the next generation of disaster risk professionals, the Academy has set the stage for more effective, interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing the interconnected hazards of tomorrow. Stay tuned for the second edition of the Academy, where new challenges, fresh ideas, and innovative solutions will continue to shape the future of disaster risk reduction.
