The Hut’s Fifth Factsheet: Advancing the use of exposure and vulnerability data in Impact-based Warnings
Communication material / Uploaded on September 23, 2026
Impact-Based Forecasting and Warning (IBFW) aims to improve preparedness and decision-making by communicating the likely consequences of hazardous weather rather than the hazard alone. Central to this approach is the integration of hazard, exposure and vulnerability information to better understand who and what may be affected, and how severe impacts may be. However, approaches to incorporate exposure and vulnerability data vary, but could have substantial influence on warning provision. Our work has investigated the variability and role of these datasets to better inform their use in risk assessment and IBFW.
The Hut’s Fourth Factsheet: Incentivizing nature-based solutions for wildfire risk reduction
Communication material / Uploaded on August 3, 2026
As wildfire risks continue to rise, attention has turned to their mitigation including through nature-based solutions (NbS) that lower hazard intensity while enhancing biodiversity, carbon storage, soil stability and local livelihoods. Insurers can support and incentivize NbS in many ways, including ‘greeniums’ by offering premium and deductible benefits to policyholders who implement risk-reducing ecological measures. A first-of-its-kind wildfire greenium has been implemented in Donner-Tahoe, Nevada, where premiums were reduced by nearly 40% after ecological forest management. Motivated by the Donner-Tahoe and other experiences, researchers in The HuT project have developed a wildfire catastrophe model for Sardinia that accounts for nature-based forest treatment. In Italy and elsewhere, greeniums can be a game changer if enabled with public support and enabling regulation.
The Hut’s Third Factsheet: Using serious games to promote risk awareness
Communication material / Uploaded on April 14, 2026
Games can be used as an interactive educational method, where the learning goals are embedded into the game design. They provide an interactive experience to better understand complex and abstract topics in a simplified way. By breaking down key concepts in geo-hydrological risk, such as probability, uncertainty and risk reduction measures, and gamifying those into game elements, we can improve understanding of risk, hence promoting risk awareness. When designing a serious game, it is critical to think about the educational content, target audience, the learning principles and the medium. In The Human-Tech Nexus (HuT) Project, we have developed a card game that teaches high-schoolers about risk management and risk reduction.
The Hut Second Factsheet : Internet of Things for Natural Hazards and Warnings
Communication material / Uploaded on June 6, 2025
Natural hazards pose a significant threat to ensuring community safety. Information is needed to help stakeholders understand the triggers and processes that drive these hazards. Just as important are data to alert stakeholders to any local changes in environmental factors that could indicate a potential problem. Internet of Things provides the means to collect real-time data on environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, pressure, seismic activity, water levels and ground movement. These data can be combined and analysed to inform decisions that may help reduce any risks to environment, infrastructure or society.
The HuT’s First Factsheet: Designing early warning services
Communication material / Uploaded on September 18, 2024
An effective warning system is a highly cost-effective way of reducing the risk from natural hazards. An effective warning system requires attention to the needs of the users and the capabilities of the producers. Users need information about the hazard, its expected impact and the actions they should take. Assembling this information and communicating it to the user may require contributions from experts in several organizations.
